social networking follow up
Bad news, in the OLC electronic newsletter this week they announced that the House of Representatives had just passed a bill that requires library and schools getting e-rate refunds to filter and block social networking and chat sites for children. We get e-rate and it's a fair amount of money, so if the bill passes the senate, we'll probably have to deal with the results. The senate will take up debate on it next week.

I read the article and am disappointed. Are we now going to go back to separate logins for adults and children. I don't really have a clue of what can be done. It seems as if these social networking sites are being targeted by politicians who can vote on a family values bill and put a good deed check mark by thier names. Perhaps forcing these site to not alow profiles for anyone under 18 and make parents liable if thier child is discovered doing so. Perhaps then more parents will pay attention to what thier children are doing on the web. Besides that how many kids will go elsewhere to post. Like Lesley said kids will just move on and the legislation will truly accomplish little. And, wherever the kids are the perverts and crazies seeking them will be there also. Next all parks should be closed then lets lock all the children up in warehouses until they are 18. Hopefully, they won't abuse each other. Maybe glass containers could be built around them and they won't have to socialize with anyone, other children, adults, or even dirty animals. That'll show those perverts! I digress in sarcastic rant.
I haven't a clue what the library can do, warn them and warn them again? Educate and guide? Because I believe the more control you force on teens the more they resist. They have to be taught to make wise descisions and learn consequences for folly and carelessness. But, I know from personal experience those are lessons hard learned.
As for abusers, castration is one word that comes to mind. Maybe the gauging out of eyes would help remedy the situation a little too. But, those would be cruel and unusual punishments. Although, we don't want to get too constitutional, do we?
